On 03/19/2024, the FBI release the Internet Crime Report 2023. If you haven’t read it before, it is similar to the VDBIR. It provides hard data on the 880,418 complaints filed their Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

It’s great content for both understanding the current threat environment and provides the credible datapoints to both shape and communicate a cybersecurity program strategy.

Highlights:

  • IC3 reported losses exceeded $12.5 billion. This represents a significant jump from 2022. **IC3 emphasizes they likely underestimate the true scope of the problem as many victims hesitate to report incidents.
  • Investment Scams and Business Email Compromise (BEC) top the charts.
  • Ransomware Attacks Show Resurgence

Some Guidance:

  • Report Cybercrime
  • Be Wary of Unsolicited Investment Offers
    Stay Alert for BEC Scams
